A Little Bit of Ireland

PIGOT'S  DIRECTORY OF IRELAND - 1824

BALLINA,

Is agreeably situated on the river Moy, in the county of Mayo, which is joined to Sligo by a bridge of sixteen arches. it is 121 miles north by east of Westport. The town which is tolerably well built, is progressively improving and has a very considerable salmon fishery. Ballina contains a small church, to which a very neat spire has lately been added; and an extensive brewery, the property of John Levingston, Esq. Not far from the town are the ruins of Roserk or Rosserick Abbey, built by one of the family of the Joices, which was of much consequence in England and Ireland in the 14th century. On the 26th of August 1798, this town was seized by the French immediately after landing at Killala, where the rebels committed many atrocities, until the surrender of the French at Ballynamuck, when it was abandoned by the deluded multitude, who were defeated and dispersed at the battle of Killala. Ballina, although a considerable distance from the bay of Killala, possesses a smart trade, its exports are chiefly grain. A new quay was lately erected about a mile down the river, and a line of canal is forming from this quay, which will communicate with the town, and in all probability, much increase the trade and convenience of the merchants. Many of the inhabitants are respectable and wealthy, and have raised within themselves a company of yeomanry consisting of 20 mounted and 50 dismounted, under the command of Colonel Cuff. Annual sessions are held her in July and weekly courts for the recovery of wages, &c., &c. There is a good market on Monday, for corn and horses; it is one of the most important in the county. Fairs are held on the 12th of May, the 3rd and 12th of June, the 12th of August and the 13th of December.- The population is rated at 7000.
