Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 JOYNT

Notes for WILLIAM JOYNT:

Sheriff of County Limerick c. 1659, was appointed on of the many Commissioners "for putting into execution" the Poll-Money Ordinances of 1660 and 1661 "for the speedy raising of Moneys towards the Supply of an Army..."

In 1662 he and Henry Salfield were the Sheriffs of Limerick City during the term of Mayor Henry Bindon. William's name disappeared from the civil lists and it probably was then that he had settled at Lismollane, for the unproved will (1668) of Sir Ralph Wilson, Knt., of Cahirconlish, Limerick, refers to "the castle, town and lands of Lysmuillane now in possession of Mr. William Joynte..." Lismollane, Clanwilliam Barony, near Cahirconlish, south of Limerick City.

Included as parties in many of the deeds were his cousins James Galbraith of Cappa(h)ard and patrick persse of Spring Garden, both Galway; as well as Charles and John Annesley of Ballysax, Kildare. James' will and codicils, all dated and proved in 1809, also mentioned that he wished to be buried in the family vault in the Killinan Churchyard, Loughrea. Notes for WILLIAM HOMAN:

I think from the looks of this that Mary Joynt was getting married to William Homan. Not sure how the others all fit in. In doing a one name study of surname Joynt I have not come across this marriage. According to Slater's National Commercial Directory of Ireland (LDS 0100103) 1846

Arabella Joynt was a pawnbroker at 4 Sir Harry's Mall. Arabella Joynt, widow was probably Arabella LANE JOYNT, as her husband William Joynt, chandler of Limerick d. 1843. Arabella Joynt, pawnbroker may have been their dau. Arabella or Arabella Lane Joynt herself. William and Arabella Lane Joynt also had a dau., Mary Joynt christened February 19, 1826, at St. John's Limerick City and would have been 21 at the time of this deed and was probably who m. William HOMAN.

ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION,

LIMERICK, SUNDAY NIGHT.--I hasten to inform you of the particulars of
a daring attempt at assassination which was made last evening upon a
respectable gentleman connected with this city. The particulars are
these :--Between five and six o'clock, Mr. Galbraith Joynt, who
holds landed property at Mount St. Catherine, county Clare, which he
recently purchased in the Incumbered Estates Court, was returning
home in his gig, and had not proceeded more than two miles on the
Clonlara road, when he was fired at from behind a hedge by some
daring assassin who lay in wait for his intended victim ; fortunately
the attempt was unsuccessful, for although wounded severely in the leg,
Mr. Joynt is not dangerously injured. The shot came from the right
hand of the road, riddled the dashboard of the vehicle, and some of
the pellets passed through the fleshy part of that gentleman's leg.
Confused and affrighted at such an unexpected attack in a lonesome
district, Mr. Joynt had the presence of mind to turn round his horse,
and though bleeding profusely, drove into this city at a quick pace, to
the house of his brother, where surgical aid was promptly rendered,
and the wounds dressed. The reason assigned is, that Mr. Joynt had
served notice of ejectment on tenants who are to be dispossessed in
March. The police of Clonara, it is understood, have received
information which, it is hoped, will lead to the arrest of the person
who committed the outrage ; and, if so, a deep-laid conspiracy will in
all likelihood be developed, as it is not long since the brother of the
gentleman attacked received a threatening notice to the effect that he
should bear in mind the spirit of Clare was not yet dead, and that he
ought to dread the fate of Gloster. It will be remembered that a few
years since Mr. Gloster was shot in his gig when coming into Limerick
from the county Clare, and that the perpetrator of the foul deed was
   never discovered.--Saunders Correspondent.

The Burren Estate

The two remaining unsold lots of the Burren estate were purchased by private sale on Friday, by William Lane Joynt, Esq., agent to Lord Anally for £11,000.

Thus the noble lord has become the owner of all the Burren estates of Mr John S Kirwan. The noble lord is also the owner of the Duke of Buckingham's estate at Ballyvaughan, Mr Burton Bindon's at Currenrue, on which are the famous oyster beds, Mr John B Scott's at New Quay, Sir Hugh Dillon Massy's Broadford estate, and Mr John Westropp's at Kilkeryne.

These represent, as whole, one of the largest territorial possession in the hands of any peer of commoner in Clare.

I notice you have mentioned the Lane-Joynts in one of your pages. Near where I live, in the southern suburbs of Dublin, there used to be a house called Prospect. A branch of the Lane-Joynt family lived there until, I think, the 1950s. The street directory from 1936 gives "W.S.R. Lane-Joynt, Barrister" as the owner. I don't know anything about them, but perhaps it's another piece of information to fit in with what you have.

Dear Cathy

Yesterday I received a copy of a history of the Myles family of Limerick, written around 1880 by Zachary Myles (b.1812). Zachary's parents, George and Eliza (née Myles) were first cousins. Eliza's older brother James had a daughter Hannah who married John Russell; Jane Russell, daughter of John and Hannah, married William Lane Joynt. A recent footnote to the Myles history says `In St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin there is a stained glass window along with a plaque, put up in memory of William Lane Joynt by his children.' I see that your pedigree of the Limerick Joynts at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmlabath/joynt7.htm stops at Wm Lane Joynt's generation.

If you have any more information on his descendants, I would like to be able to put it with my Myles information. If you would like a copy of the Myles document (36 typed pages), please send me your snailmail address. Several of the Myles family married Parkers; in particular, Hannah Myles (sister of Eliza and James) married Thomas Parker, brother of my GGGGgrandfather Craven Parker of Briska More, county Limerick. \pw

Ballyvaughan Sale

An extensive sale of cattle sheep, &c., took place on Thursday last at Clareville near Ballyvaughan, the residence of William Lane Joynt, Esq, whose property they were, and who disposed of them in consequence of his having to give possession of the farm at Ballyalbin on the 1st of May to Mr Christie, of Limerick. The stock consisted of 285 head of cattle, including 100 three year old heifers, 30 two year old bullocks, 100 hoggets, and 50 fat sheep. They were disposed in lots by auction, and the bidding was keen and brisk, and excellent prices were obtained for the entire stock.

The FOUNDER of the Limerick Athenaeum was WILLIAM LANE JOYNT who achieved the unique distinction of being elected Mayor of Limerick in 1862 and Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1867. William Lane Joynt (1824-1895) apprenticed as a solicitor to Matthew Barrington of the leading law firm Barrington & Co. The Barrington family lived at Glenstal Castle and built Barrington's Hospital for the citizens of Limerick. In 1852, William Lane Joynt as President of the Limerick Literary & Scientific Society, proposed the establishment of a Limerick Athenaeum. In 1862 he was elected Mayor of Limerick and the following year he moved to Dublin where in 1867 he was elected Lord Mayor. In 1869 he was appointed the Crown and Treasury Solicitor for Ireland. He took a keen interest in the development of the West Coast sea fishing industry and is responsible for the construction of many piers and slipways on the coastline. In Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare, where he maintained a summer house, his name is inscribed in a monument for his successful efforts to persuade the local landlord, the Baron Annaly, to provide a free water supply for the tenants. He died in 1895 and is buried in the grounds of the churchyard at St. John's Square Limerick.

FEAT OF BICYCLING

Mr.Richard Lane Joynt left Port old school, Enniskillen, on Wednesday morning and rode to Roscommon that day, continuing the journey to Clare the next morning. He arrived at Clareville, Ballyvaughen on Thursday evening in time for dinner with his father, Mr.William Lane Joynt D.L. who is sojourning at his marine residence in that picturesque and salubrious locality. This was a creditable performance, considering the difficulty of the journey, and the steep Burren hills he had to encounter.
