Vojvodina

The Hungarians of Yugoslavia live in a region called by two names: Vojvodina or Western Banat: (Hungarian: Vajdaság / Bánság). There, there are 2 million inhabitants, and Hungarians were, 339,491 in 1991, 16.9 % of the pop. After the 1st world war, the Banat was cut in half. Serbia received the western part (which is now part of Vojvodina), and Romania received the eastern part (which is now part of Transylvania).

Austria-Hungarian Empire that ruled over the territory of todays Banat lasted until the end of the WWI when it collapsed, and one part of the Banat territory (the other is in today's Romania) became a part of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Kraljevstvo Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca) which was proclaimed in 1918. On January 6, 1929, after he abolished the Constitution and prorogued the Parliament, King Aleksandar changed the name of the state into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (Kraljevina Jugoslavija). After the WWII, communists established their sovereignty over the whole territory of Yugoslavia (as one of the winning forces aftermath the WWII) and through the next 50 years, country changed its name from Federative People's Republic of Yugoslavia (FNRJ), Socialists Federative Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRJ), and after the recent civil war in 90's and proclamation of independent countries which previously constituted SFRJ, remaining Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro united as Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Several years ago, after the new Constitution was brought, state got its actual name – Serbia and Montenegro.

 

Kovacica (prior Antalfalva (HUN), Kowatschitza (GER)is a village in Banat, todays Serbia and Montenegro, Province of Vojvodina.

 

It is famous of its school of naive painting, which became well known to the world in the last decades.

 

It is a municipality with population of 7426 (2002) of which the majority are Slovaks (6337) who are mainly Evangelists.

According to the 1925 IA Census they lived in Rural Davenport and owned their home at a value of 2000.00. He had a 5th grade education and at that time had lived in U.S. for 20 years; although, Susan had only lived here 19 years. He listed his fathers age as 55 which may not be true since that would have made his father 14 years old at the time of his birth and his mother would have been 19.

Yeggs' Careful Plans to Open Office Safe Prove Productive of No Loot

     A Safe in the private office of J.M. Siegel, joint proprietor of the Davenport Dry Goods company, 314-316 West Second street, proved a Will-o'-the-Wisp for yeggmen whose careful plans and tedious labor resulted in disappointment last night, when they found the safe devoid of valuables.

     That the store robbery was planned last week is evidenced by the fact that a skylight in the fourth floor of the building was found torn from its hinges last Monday. Cross-beams were placed across the skylight as soon as the destruction wsa discovered but these beams did not deter the yeggs from entering last night. This morning, when the attempted safe robbery was discovered by George Labath, a janitor, the cross-piece had been torn away.

     The yeggmen gained access to the skylight by climbing a fire escape on a building in the rear of the Siegel store, and walking over roofs. Descending thru the skylight to the third floor, they entered Mr. Siegel's office. There, they moved the office desk in front of the window so as to preclude discovery.

     Adhesive tape was then wrapped about the combination knob of the safe to deaden the sound of blows believed to have been struck with a sledge hammer or other heavy implement. Police believe that it took the yeggmen several hours to open the safe.

     When the janitor entered Mr. Siegel's office this morning, he found personal papers scattered about in general disorder. He notified the proprietor, who upon investigation stated that nothing had been taken. No money or articles commercially valuable had been kept in the safe.

     Altho the usual closing time of the store is 5:30 o'clock in the evening, Mr. Siegel remained there until 6:30 o'clock last night because of an employes' lecture. The janitor left at 6:45 o'clock. The yeggmen are believed to have kept watch until everyone had left.

     Police officers who took finger prints in Mr. Siegel's office today report that a skylight on the Katz Furniture company building nextg door had been tampered with. A dry goods company's elevator shaft had been broken, but this method of entrance apparently proved impossible for the thieves.

     The Davenport Dry Goods company's "job" is similar to other safe attacks which have been perpetrated here during the last week, police officials state. An organized gang of yeggmen is alleged to be working in Davenport.

     Mr and Mrs. George Labath, 2330 Telegraph Rd., were honored at a surprise party by 24 members of the immediate family in observance of their 50th wedding anniversary.

     They were married Oct. 29, 1905, in Austria-Hungary, and came to this country in 1906, settling in southern Illinois. They came to Davenport in 1916 and have made their home here since.

     They have three sons, George Jr., Michael and John, Davenport; two daughters, Mrs. W.C. Kuehl, Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Mrs. M.M. Lemon, Davenport, and 13 grandchildren. The Kuehls attended the celebration. Mr. Labath was employed at Ralston-Purina before retiring.

Kuehl-Labath Wedding Saturday

     An Easter eve wedding which took place at the parsonage of Zion Lutheran church was that of Miss Suzanne Labath, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Labath of Telegraph road and Wilfred C. Kuehl, son of Mrs. D.S. Garner of Esplanade avenue, the ceremony having been at 4 in the afternoon. The Rev. Carl Holtermann officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Specht, the latter a sister of the bridegroom attended the couple.

     The bride was in a gown of blue georgette and tan hat and carried roses. Mrs. Specht wore blue georgette and hat to match. Her flowers were also roses.

     The wedding dinner of the evening was at the residence of the groom and the couple will reside with Mrs. Garner, the groom's mother, until they go to their own home. Decorations were in the Easter flowers and colors.

     Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. E. Bowens of Atkinson, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Zak of Racine, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. Kolonich of City Point, Wis. Mr. Kuehl is with the Kuehl Motor company of this city.

Services for George P. Labath, 74, of 2041 4th St., Rock Island, will be 2:30 p.m. today at Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.

He died Wednesday at Moline Lutheran Hospital.

He had been employed 23 years at Birtman's Electric Co., Rock Island. He later retired in 1979 after 21 years at Davenport Alcoa Works.

Mr. Labath married Alice Schroeder in 1936 in Davenport. She died in 1971. He later married Phyllis Lambert in 1972 in Boulder, Colorado.

Visitation is 9 a.m. to service time today at the mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the family.

He was a member of Vikings Club and Eagles Lodge, both of Moline; Moose Lodge, Rock Island; and Alcoa Retirees Club; and a former member of Northwest Turners, Davenport.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Judy (Mrs. Doyle) Rinehart, Bettendorf; sons, Gary, Muskegon, Mich., and Dale, Davenport; a stepdaughter, Betsy (Mrs. Lynn) Stephenson, Omaha, Neb.; a stepson, Jhn Lambert, Memphis, Tenn; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Lemon, Long Grove, Iowa; and a brother, John, University City, Mo.

     ROCK ISLAND- Phyllis M. Labath, 90, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Rock Island, died April 24, 2003, in Omaha.

     Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Larson Funeral Home. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo.

    Visitation is 1-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

     She worked at Marshall & Huchart, Rock Island, for 10 years.

     Mrs. Labath was born Sept. 10, 1912, to Floyd and Emma Larson Meeker. She married Dale Lambert on June 18, 1935, in Geneseo. She married George Labath on July 31, 1972, in Greenly, Colo. He preceded her in death in 1965.

     She was a Sunday school techer at First Evangelical Free Church, Moline, for 40 years, and attended bible study and sewing classes at First Covenant Church, Omaha, for the last 10 years. She was a member of the Rock Island PTA and the Hy-Ya club and was a hospital volunteer at Lutheran Hospital, Moline, and Methodist hospital, Omaha.

     Her hobbies include sewing, Bible studies, writing, fishing and dancing.

Services for Melvin M Lemon, 69, of Long Grove, will be 11 a.m. Monday at Weerts/Hill & Fredericks Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Lemon died Friday at Mercy Hospital.

Mr. Lemon was former manager of the Triangle Truck Port, Davenport, and a retired painting contractor.

He married Elizabeth Labath in 1947 in Peoria, Illinois.

John Labath

     Services for John H. Labath, 80, of Long Grove, were held at noon on Tuesday, May 23, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove. According to his wishes the body was donated to St. Louis University, School of Medicine, Department of Anatomy. The Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

     Mr. Labath died Saturday, May 20, 2006, atthe Kahl Home for the Aged, Davenport, after a brief illness.

     John Labath was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Davenport, the son of George and Susan (Farkas) Labath. He married Suzanne Petersen on June 25, 1949, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. She died July 2, 2004.

     Mr. Labath retired in 1989 as a receiving foreman for Emerson Electric Company, St. Louis, after 17 years.

     He served his country in the Army during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart.

     Mr. Labath was a member of the church, the Catfish Jazz Club, St. Louis Jazz, Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Society, and Disabled American Veterans.

     He enjoyed gardening, horseshoes and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

     Memorials may be made to the church or the American Cancer Society.

     Surviviors include daughters, Josei Labath, Moline; and Susie and husband Thomas Gaskin, St. Louis, Mo.; sons John Jr. and wife Catherine, Long Grove, Marty and wife Barb, Park View, Peter and wife Margaret, Harvester, Mo.; Bert and wife Gail, Beaumont, Texas, Bill and wife Shannon, Yale, Iowa and Tony and wife Judy, Gurley, Ala.; 26 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

     In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Susan Kuehl and Elizabeth Lemon; and brothers, George and Michael.

Suzanne Labath

     Davenport - Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Suzanne M. Labath, 74, a resident of Long Grove will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove. Following Suzanne's request, her body has been deeded for medical research to St. Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo., where she and her husband had resided in previous years. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from Noon until the time of services at St. Ann's. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting with arrangements.

     Suzanne M. Petersen was born April 16, 1930, in Davenport, a daughter of William and Celesta (Wesdendorf) Petersen. She ans her siblings were raised in Buffalo, Iowa. Suzanne was united in marriage to John H. Labath, Sr., on June 25, 1949.

     Mrs. Labath was a member of the church, St. Ann's Women's Guild, Epilepsy Foundation and the Buffalo Iowa Historical Society. She enjoyed listening to music and had a beautiful voice when singing. She and John had been members of St. Louis Jazz Club; Bix Biederbecke Memorial Society; and Cat Fish Jazz Club.

     In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Ann's Women's Guild or the St. Ann's Music Guild.

     Survivors include her husband of 55 years, John H. Labath, Sr., Long Grove; daughters and a son-in-law, Josie Labath and friend, Dan Thompson, Moline, and Suzy and Tom Gaskin, St. Louis; sons and daughters-in-law, John and Cathy Labath, Jr., Long Grove, Marty and Barb Labath, Parkview, Iowa, Peter and Margaret Labath, Harvester, Mo., Bert and Gail Labath, Beaumont, Texas, Bill and Shannon Labath, Yale, Iowa and Tony and Judy Labath, Gurley, Ala.; 26 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Petersen, Kansas City, Mo.

    Her parents, a brother, William Petersen, and sisters, Mary Jo Stolemeier and Esther Bailey preceded her in death. May they rest in peace.
