Daniel Murphy, Sr.
Was a Resident of County for Fifty-One Years
Daniel Murphy, Sr., one of the oldest citizens of our county, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Burns, of Emmetsburg township, last Thursday morning. He had been ill but a short time, though for several months he had not shown the hardiness or the vigor for which he was noted. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon. There was a large procession. Services were conducted at Assumption church by Very Rev. J. J. Smith. The interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pallbearers were Thomas Kirby, John Burns, James Conway, Charles Nolan, Patrick Eaton, and Patrick Joynt.
The deceased was born in the county of Meath, Ireland, March 3, 1816. He came to the United States in 1848. He was married at Newark, New Jersey, October 7, 1853, to Elizabeth Lowery. Mr. and Mrs. Murphy came west soon after, living for four years at Elgin, Illinois. In 1857, they moved to Palo Alto county and soon after located on the farm in Emmetsburg township on which he spent the remainder of his career. Mrs. Murphy died nine years ago. The surviving members of his family are five sons and four daughters. The sons are Lawrence J., of Sioux City, and Patrick J., Daniel Edward, and M. L. of this county. The daughters are Mesdames John Eaton, Chris Claer, Daniel Donahue, and Thomas Burns.
There are no more exemplary or deserving people in our community than these sons and daughters. There are 34 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The deceased held front rank with the many worthy pioneers who laid the foundation of our community. Fifty-one years ago he lived in a small house that was located about where the sheriff's residence now stands. He was a plain, straightforward, honest man. He was simple in his tastes and his habits. He was anything but pretentious. He was an humble, economical, and thrifty toiler. He was hospitable and charitable. He never turned from his door the tired and needy traveler. He was an obliging and a helpful neighbor. Had all been as patient and as justly disposed as he was, there would have been little to do for the courts or police officers. He lived to an exceptionally ripe old age, leaving to the surviving members of his family a record of industry, usefulness, and unpretentious, conscientious devotion to duty which they can always justly and proudly treasure. The Democrat joins their numerous friends and neighbors in extending sincere sympathy to them in the death of one who was so dear to them and whose career of over fifty years of activity in our county was so closely associated with its moral welfare.

From the Emmetsburg Democrat Wednesday Feb. 1, 1905:
Mrs. Edward Murphy is Dead
Mrs. Edward Murphy died quite unexpectedly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. James Donahue, of Emmetsburg twonship, Saturday evening , at 6:30. She was 72 years of age. The funeral was held Tuesday. The usual services were conducted at Assumption church and the interment was in St. John's cemetery. There was a large procession.
The deceased was born in the county of Galway, Ireland in 1833. Her maiden name was Mary Joynt. She was a sister of Patrick, John and Michael Joynt, and Mrs. David Higgins, of this place. She came to America in 1853. She lived at Binghampton, New York, one year. In 1854 she went to Pittsburg, Penn. July 15, 1861, she was united in marriage to Michael Nestor. In 1856 they moved to Dyersville, where they resided until 1869. In the spring of 1869 Mr. Nestor came to Palo Alto county and took up a homestead in Emmetsburg township, three miles west of this city. April 28, of the same year, while hunting at Virgin lake, in the western part of the county, he was drowned by the capsizing of the boat which he was rowing. The following September the wife and five children came from Dyersville and settled on the homestead, where she continued to reside until her death. May 21, 1872, she was united in marriage to Edward Murphy who died March 4, 1893. The children born to the first union were Dr. R.J. Nestor, of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Thomas Mulry, of Chicago; David, who died April 8, 1890; Joseph, of Wash, Oklahoma; and Mrs. S. C. Noll, of O'Neill, Nebraska. The children born to the second union are L. Murphy, of this city, and Mrs. James Donahue, who resides on the old homestead. All the surviving members of the family were present at the funeral except Joseph.
Mrs. Murphy was one of the best wives and mothers in the community. She was quiet, unassuming and frugal and her zeal for the education, training and comforts of the members of her family is splendidly exemplified in the lives of the most respected sons and daughters who survive. She was a devout member of the Catholic Church. Her actions were constantly influenced by the highest Christian motives. The dreaded messenger called her quite suddenly, but she knew well God's laws and she observed them, fully realizing that those who live as they should are best prepared to answer the final call. It is hard indeed for the devoted sons and daughters to part with the fondest and best friend that the world knows-she who in infancy, in youth, and in more advanced years, would have cheerfully given up her live were it necessary to insure their safety, but such sad, such dreade partings must in time come to all homes. There is, however, in death's solemn presence, consolation when it is realized taht the live that has gone out was sincere, exemplary, and edifying and that God rewards justly all who serve him faithfully.

Gave life for others
Sister Mary Christine, Daughter of Mr. amd Mrs. Chris Clare, who recently died in Chicago Sister Mary Christine, formerly known to our many readers as Miss Katherine Clare, died in Chicago on Monday of last week. She had not been rugged for some time but her condition did not become serious until four or five days before the final summons came. The funeral services were held in St. Bridget's Church, Sister Mary Christine having taught for several years in the parish school. Mass was celebrated by Father O'Sullivan, the pastor. He delivered an instructive sermon at the close and he paid a well deserved tribute to the worth of the good Sister, who had been called to her final reward. A large number of priests and sisters were in attendance. Mrs. Chris Clare of this city, mother of the deceased and her daughter, Miss Mary, of Spirit Lake were present at the obsequies. The burial was in Calvary cemetery.
Katherine Clare was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Clare, who were among the pioneers of Emmetsburg township. She was born March 10, 1882. She attended St. Mary's Academy of this place for some time, after which she was a student at the Catholic Academy at Charles City. She entered Mt. Carmel at Dubuque as a novice on September 8, 1900. She took her final vows as a member of the order of the Sisters of Charity of B. V. M. in 1903. She taught in St. Francis Academy at Council Bluffs for seven years and was on duty as a teacher in a convent at St. Louis for two or three years. The remainder of her life, as a member of the community to which she belonged, was spent in Chicago. She was actively engaged for several years in St. Bridget's school. She devoted seventeen years of her life to laborious work in the school room. She is survived by her parents of this city and by seven brothers and three sisters. The brothers are Edward, P. J., Chris, Thomas, Leo, Joseph and Vincent. Edward is in the service in France. The sisters are Miss Mary Clare of Spirit Lake and Misses Margaret and Rose Clare who are at home.
In her girlhood years, Sister Mary Christine gave promise of a life of piety and devotion to works of charity and helpfulness to society. She was quiet, modest and humble and she applied herself diligently in the school room that she might prove herself worthy of the high calling in which she had fixed her ambition. When she had finished the years of her novitiate and had taken the solemn obligations of the religious order of her choice, she put all of the earnestness of her soul into the exacting labours of the consientious and zealous teacher. True to her view of chastity, poverty and obedience, she dismissed from her mind all worldly considerations and sought to give her undivided attention and efforts to the spiritual and educational welfare of the little children who were entrusted to her supervision in the classroom. She never received a cent in compensation for her services. This is the rule of the order. All that she was allowed were her meals, the plain garments that she wore and her lodging. Hence her life was one of sacrifice for education and religion. How well she succeeded as a teacher is well known to the people of the communities in which she laboured. Who will doubt that God will reward her abundantly for the humble, devoted career she led and for all that she did that others might be benefited. The sincere sympathy of all is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Clare and to their sons and daughters in their sorrow.

Death of Daniel Clare
Passed Away in Spencer Hospital Last Saturday
Sunday morning our citizens were pained to learn of he death of Daniel J Clare, son of Mr. and mrs. Chris Clare, of Emmetsburg township, which occurred at the hospital at Spencer on Saturday. He had made several trips to Rochester, Minnesota to consult Drs. Mayo and he also visited other places, but he was not given any encouragement. A short time ago he went to Spencer. Early Saturday morning his mother and his brother Patrick of this place were called to his bedside. They reached Spencer only a few hours before he passed away. His ailment was Bright's disease, which was attended with other complications. His health had been declining for about three years. The funeral was held Monday forenoon. There was a large attendance. A requiem high mass was celebrated at Assumption church, Very Rev. P.F. Farrelly officiating. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Wm Joynt, H. Brennan, Andrew Grace, Joseph Joyce, L. Ryan and Joseph Joynt. Mr. Clare was born in this county October 26, 1883. Hence he was 29 years of age. He is survived by his parents, four sisters and eight brothers. All the members of the family reside in this community except Chris of Bushtown, Kansas, Edward of Omaha and Sister Mary Christine of Council Bluffs. Both of the absent brothers were present at the funeral.
The death of Mr. Clare at such an early age in life is a severe blow to his parents and to his brothers and sisters. He was an obedient, dutiful, loving son and an affectionate brother. His life was most ecemplary. No young man in our community stood higher among his neighbors and associates. He was humble and courteous and would not knowingly injure the feelings of any person. He was frugal and thrifty and, for his years, his efforts, from a business standpoint, had been crowned with success. He had everything to live for and to hope for when his health failed and he was forced to give up all that was encouraging and enjoyable. His taking off shows the uncertainty of life under the most favorable circumstances . God knows what is best for the young, teh fair and the vigorous as well as for the aged, the declining and the decrepid . Those who strive to do his holy will and who have confidence in his goodness andin his mercy will be rewarded with happiness that will continue through the endless ages of eternity. Mr. Clare will be sadly missed by those who were near and dear to him, but they will be consoled by the knowledge that his career was useful and edifying and that he stood so high in the respect of his fellow men. The sympathy of all is extended to them in their bereavement.

MRS. DANIEL DONAHUE DEAD
The Funeral Was Held Tuesday Morning.
Mrs. Daniel Donahue died early Sunday morning at her home in Emmetsburg township. The sad news was not a surprise to our many local citizens as she had been very low for a long time and her death had been almost daily expected for several weeks. She had not been rugged for three or four years, although the seriousness of her condition was not fully realized until about eleven weeks ago, since which time she was not able to be about. The funeral was held yesterday. It was very largely attended, several coming from a distance to be present at the last solemn exercises. Services were held at St. Thomas church. A requiem high mass was celebrated by Father McNerney. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall beareres were Patrick Joynt, Michael Joynt, John J. Kane, Owen McNulty, James P. Conway, and Thomas Kirby.
Mary Murphy ws born in this community February 22, 1866. Hence she was within a few days of being 46 years of age. November 9, 1892, she was united in marriage at Assumption church in this city to Daniel Donahue. Besides the husband, there are two daughters - Alice aged 15, and Elizabeth, aged 13. There are five brothers and three sisters. The brothers are L. J., P. J., D. T., E. F., and M. L. Murphy. All reside in this county except L. J. who lives at Sioux City. There are also three sisters - Mesdames John Eton, C. Claer, and Thomas Burns, all of this vicinity.
Mrs. Donahue was one of the most exemplary Christian wives and mothers in our county. She was humble, patient, dutiful, kind and condsiderate. Her actions were at all times edifying. She was a woman of pure, lofty ideals and she was, under all circumstances, true to them. She would make many sacrifices rather than incur the enmity of others, although she would not reglect for any one what she regarded as a duty. She had a beautiful, comfortable, happy home and she did all that mortal could do to make it the abiding place of love, joy, and contentment. She was called from her affectionate and dutiful husband and her loving children in the best, the most useful years of her life. She will be dearly missed by them and by our citizens in general but her worthy purposes and her ennobling deeds will be long and helpfully remembered by all who knew her and respected her.

Obit from The Palo Alto Tribune Wed. Jan. 6th, 1914:
Mrs. Ed Murphy
Sad indeed was the message that conveyed news of the death of Mrs. Ed Murphy which occurred at ther home in Walnut township on Wednesday of last week. Following the birth of a baby the mother was summoned from life and the baby too passed away. The body was brought to Emmetsburg for burial. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Louis Anthofer at Assumption church on New Years Day and the interment was made in St. John's cemetery. Miss Mary Joynt was born in Emmetsburg township on May 2, 1875. There she grew to young womanhood. On May 20, 1894 she was united in marriage to Edward Murphy. To this union thirteen children were born, five of whom survive their mother. Mrs. Murphy was a good woman, faithful in her duties, devotion and sacrifices to her husband and family. Much indeed, has been taken from them, for on earth there is no love like mother love, and none other can administer such care as she. Death is sad at any time but when a young woman, in the prime of life, a mother whose care in devotion is needed by dependent children is taken, only the knowledge that a Divine Providence has intervened, can satisfy human nature that all is well. Besides her husband and five children, Mrs. Murphy leaves her mother, Mrs. John Joynt, one sister, Mrs. Michael Hoben, and a half brother, Henry Joynt, all of whom share in teh sympathy of the community which is freely extended.

From the Emmetsburg Democrat, Wed. January 29, 1913:
Died Rather Unexpectedly
Miss Claudie, Twin Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Murphy
A sad death occurred in this city last Wednesday. Tuesday afternoon while returning to St. Mary's academy, after the dinner hour, Claudie Murphy, aged 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Murphy of Emmetsburg township, fell on the ice a short distance north of the building, her head striking on the ground. She did not seem to be injured very badly at the time and, after going into her room, took her seat as usual. She complained during the afternoon that she had a headache. She did not jinform her Sister what had happened to her. She was told that she need not study until she would feel better. She returned to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John McNally where she and her little twin sister were boarding, and after eating a light supper, retired for the night. She complained that she was not feeling very well but Mrs. McNally did not consider her condition in any sense serious. The following morning she did not get up. She did not have any appetite but drank a little coffee. Mrs. McNally washed her face and comberd her hair but did not consider her ill enough to send for her parents. Her little sister went to school as usual. About eleven o'clock Claudie became worse. Dr. Hennessy was summoned. He did not realize what had happend to her, as she had not told anyone about falling down and injuring her head. She died within an hour. Dr. Hennessy says he is confident that her death was the result ot the concussion of the brain. Teh remains were taken to the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Myles McNally, of this city. Her parents did not reach her bedside in time to see her alive.
The funeral was held Friday morning, most of the girls of the Academy attending in a body. Services were conducted at Assumption church at 10 o'clock, Very Rev. P.F. Farrelly celebrating a requiem high mass. At the close he spoke of her aptness, diligence and obedience as a pupil and of the sacrifices that her parents had made to give their children a religious education, closing with a few well chosen remarks on the responsibility of parents in providing for the moral safety of their boys and girls. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Carl Berger, Ray Nally, Herbert Claer, Earl Murphy, Michael Collins, and Peter Collins.
Seldom has death occasioned more profound sorrow in our community than did the passing of this sweet, innocent little school girl. She was a twin daughter and she was the recipient of many attentions by friends as well as the hope of loving solicitious and zealous parental hearts. They had spared no effort to give thier children special opportunities and it is sad to think that she was stricken down almost without a moment's warning. However, Providence must have a wise purpose in permitting such occurrences. His ways are indeed often mysterious. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended to the parents and other relatives in their sorrow.

Young Mother Passes Beyond Thursday
One of the saddest deaths we have been called upon to chronicle is that of Mrs. Francis Jackman, which occurred about 2 a.m. Thursday, November 13. Here a young wife and mother was called from earthly scenes, leaving a heartbroken husband and six children - all young and dependent upon a mother's care and guidance. Death came at the birth of a baby boy who did not survive his mother. Seldom is anything sadder than was this mother lying in the casket grasping the hand of the infant son, who lay beside her, and for whom she had sacrificed her life. Yet, sad as this was, there was something so beautiful about it that eternal hope was enlivened within the heart and soul of everyone who gazed upon them. Funeral services were held at St. Thomas church at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery. The pallbearers were Len Sherlock, Joe Sherlock, Joe Donahue, Adolph Spies, Bud Phelan, and Gene Kane. Miss Eva Murphy, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Murphy of Emmetsburg township, was born on July 23, 1894. She grew up in this vicinity, graduated from St. Mary's Academy, and taught school successfully for several years. She united in marriage with Francis Jackman on January 19, 1915. This ceremony took place in the Assumption Church in this city. They located on a farm in Walnut township. A beautiful new home was built - one of the finest farm homes in this county. This with excellent barns and outbuildings of every sort needed on the farm was an opening to a happy and prosperous life. As years went on they were as prosperous as was possible for farmers to be under existing conditions and their home was one of the happiest that could be found. This husband and wife were loving and companionable. They worked and planned together, sharing each other's sorrows and joys, and in all good time they were additionally blessed by a family of beautiful, bright children. Six of these, three boys and three girls, survived their mother. The girls are Jean 12, Mary 8, Margaret 5. The boys are Robert 10, John 3, and little Dick, who is only 18 months old. Mrs. Jackman was a loveable woman. Her manner was mild, gentle and most attractive. She had a cheerful disposition, and was kind and pleasant to everyone. She was a wonderful mother, never failing in the least to do her full duty as such. Her husband never found her wanting. She was a good housekeeper and loved to make her home an ideally happy one. Her death calls us all again to wonder why a Divine Providence should permit a husband and little children to be thus bereaved. Her own life imbued with a lively faith and animated with Christian faith would bid her loved ones to submit and say "Thy Will Be Done". God knows best and never forsakes His children. Time may not tell why, but eternity will bring the answer, and all will be compensated. Besides the husband and six little children, Mrs. Jackman is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Murphy, and four brothers, Gene, Earl, Morris and Francis Donahue. To them the Tribune extends sincere sympathy and trusts that time will soon soothe their sorrow.

Murphy Dies In Japan Of Jeep Injuries
Sgt. Dan M. Murphy, 23, son of Mrs. Mary Murphy of Emmetsburg, died in a hospital in the Tokyo area Monday, Jan. 19, a telegram to his mother Wednesday night from the army reported.
The tragic message followed one received about three weeks ago in which young Murphy was reported as seriously injured in a jeep accident in Korea. The earlier message listed his injuries as a fractured pelvis and other injuries and described his condition as "questionable."
Wednesday's telegram was signed by William E. Berger, Maj. Gen. U. S. A. and read: "The acting secretary of the army has asked me to express his deep regrets that your son, Sgt. Dan M. Murphy, died in Japan Jan. 19, 1953." The message added that more details would be forwarded later.
The only premonition that Mrs. Murphy had that Dan was not recovering satisfactorily was a letter she received Monday from an army hospital in Tokyo which said the young soldier had undergone surgery and gave his condition as "serious." It was signed by an army doctor.
Dan graduated from Emmetsburg Catholic High School and had been employed in Emmetsburg, his last job having been with the Emmetsburg Cooperative Creamery Co. With the infantry, he took his training at Fort Hood, Tex. and had been overseas for several months or more. He was to receive his discharge the last of February. The last letter the Murphy family here had from him was written from Korea Dec. 15. Dan would have been 24 in May.
Survivors include his mother and four brothers, Don, Bill and Dick, all of Emmetsburg, and Jerry with the U. S. Navy at San Diego, Calif.; also two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Shimon of Austin, Minn. and Miss Eva Murphy of Minneapolis. All were notified of their brother's death Wednesday night except Jerry who could not immediately be located.
