Memories of Minerva Frances Hollander:
" I was born MINERVA FRANCES HOLLANDER, near Emmetsburg, Iowa, and we left there when I was 12, for North Dakota.. I was in the 5th grade. Dad had a homestead near Bierman, N.D. and he bought another section.. he had at least 2 sections, or about 64 acres all together.. He also had land in Canada and Iowa.
He and my Mother, LUCY ADAMS, married and had nine children, me being the third. My father had a sister in France... He came from Luxembourg, and his parents were probably deceased when he came over and through Ellis Island. He had an uncle (or cousins?) "GRAYTON" who came to visit us. I thought he lived somewhere in N. Dakota.
My Grandfather came from Europe too..."JACK" had to learn English...
Mom remembered her mother , LUCY, throwing cold water on either "John" or "Jack" when he came home drunk.. She said they (the kids) heard how the taverns were all cleared out on Sundays, so the "boys" could go to Mass.
She also remembered her Grandma and Grandpa and sister, Cecilia (18 mos. old) having the measles.
Her Grandpa wanted to be a doctor, but his mother didn't want him to.
She recalled cousin, Gladys, (Uncle Bill's daughter... that is Bernard's brother) getting burned severly, and Grandpa taking care of her.
Then it was a bad time for Mom in 1950, when she came down with Sciatica ( a debilitating disease affecting the largest nerve of the body, extending along the back part of the thigh and leg). She suffered a lot, and at one time the doctors wanted to operate, and possibly cut off her leg... She'd have none of that, and with Pop's constant encouragement and care, plus the Niagara Massage Machine, managed to pull through this in about 3 years. (She said when David was born my Sciatica ended!"
MINERVA FRANCES HOLLANDER BOOTH
Minerva was born in 1903 in Emmetsburg, Iowa on January 24, hwere she was raised with her three brothers and 5 sisters. The Hollander family moved to the homest3ead acreage near Bierman, N. Dakota, in 1915 when Minerva was 12. Her father, who after immigrating to the United States from Luxembourg in the late 1800s, met and married Lucy Margaret Adams, who later was one of the victims of the terrible flu epidemic that killed so many.
Minerva was 16 at the time of ehr Mother's death, and with her Grandmother and sisters, helped with rearing the remaining children. Her sisters were Annie, Mary, Cecilia, Monica and Audrey and her brothers were Matthew, Felix and Jack. Monica Hollander Keller, west of Bowman, N.D. is the last of their family now.
When Minerva was 18, she married Bernard Leslie Booth of Emmetsburg, Iowa, after his return from France where he served in the infantry in WWI. He was born February 9, 1899, and died April 8, 1967.
He attended dental college after their marriage and they moved to Chicago, Ill., also Detroit, Mich. It was a difficult time.. they were in the midst of the depression, and their family was growing, so they decided to head west, and made the rough journey over those old-time narrow roads, in their pride and joy, their Model T Ford.. they, their three youngsters, (all under 6) plus an occasional relative.
She sometimes recalled that trip to Portland, Ore., with mixed emothios.. She recalled one nightmarish time, when all three of the kids came down with whooping cough.. makeing them not so desireable as guests at the Grandparents home in Emmetsburg. Even the kids remember that winter, when it was so cold, there was ice and frost on the inside walls.
However, they made it - first settled in Portland, Ore., then on to West Kelso, Wash., where for about 5 years, the young dental technician struggled to make a living, and then in spite of hard times and meager work, he , (with the help of a dentist friend..) opened the area's first dental clinic. It was a successful venture, and in time, the yhoung couple and their four children moved into their first and only home in Longview, Wash, where Minerva lived until her death, December 18, 1995. She was the epitome of the ideal homemaker for all of ehr life. Their children are: Bernard Leslie Booth Jr., born July 14, 1922; Elva Francis Booth (Whitney-Potochnik-Parker) born July 2, 1923; homer Eugene Booth, born May 13, 1926 and Richard John Booth, born january 7, 1930.
She had 12 grandchildren:
Children of Richard and Gaynor (Idler-Booth) now Alcid, are: David Booth, Sherry Harding, Janis Frasier, Becky Frazier, Richie Booth and Pam Gaddis.
Children of Homer Booth and wife Pat (Zaworski) Booth, are Juleann Aucoin (Booth), Greg Booth, Randy Booth and Scott Booth.
Children of Elva Booth Whitney and James Whitney are nancy Whitney Hicks, and Michael Scott Whitney.
Minerva told about life out there on the prairie of North Dakota and their horses. She loved the family horse named "Jargle" (once won a neighborhood race riding the faithful pet) and their ducks and sheep... It was painful to her when they sold them..
She liked churning the butter, doing some chores (not scrubbing the kitchen chairs though) and didn't like the out-house way out in the back. Her favorite memory seemed to be her beautiful Mother saving all the luxurious cuttings of the girl's hair, making wigs to sell.
