ELDRIDGE NOTES
Feb. 5, 1894

     The obsequies of the late Mr. H.L. Kuhl, were held at the Eldridge church on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock and a large cortege conducted the remains to Pine Hill cemetery, the place of interment.
     The bans have been published for the marriage of Mr. Henry Meinhardt and Miss Francis Brus. Congratulations.
     The members of the family of Mr. Peter Meinert, who have been afflicted with scarlet fever, are being restored to health.
     The Hon. Lorenz Rogge was with us a few days. He came from Des Moines to attend the wedding of his son Philip.
     There was an addition to the family of Mr. Wm. Lage Sunday in the form of a little girl.

Feb. 6, 1894

     The marriage of Mr. Henry Meinhardt and Miss Frances Bruce was solemnized at St. Joseph's church on Monday, Feb. 5th, the Rev. Father Nierman officiating. Dinner was served to a large number of invited guests, at the home of the bride's mother, near Maysville. The couple will be at home to their friends after March, on the farm recently purchased of the Berkey heirs, by Mr. Philip Meinhardt, father of the groom. Their numerous friends wish them a long and happy life.

Eldridge, Ia., May 14- Several of our people attended church services at the Summit church Sunday evening...Peter Schwartz attended the Republican state convention at Des Moines last week as a delegate. He says it was one of the largest and most enthusiastic state conventions he ever saw. He is confident that Iowa and the nation will give McKinley an overwhelming majority this fall...Herman Bontonshoen has taken down the barn he put up last fall...Dr. Maxwell of Long Grove, made a professional visit here Saturday...Andrew Paul is making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kepler, this summer...Two new members were initiated into the secrets of the Court of Honor lodge at Long
Grove Saturday night...Mr. and Mrs. Brown, of Argo, visited friends here Saturday and Sunday...The carpenters' strike does not effect Eldridge- our carpenters are striking nails as fast as they can...The merry click of the corn planter can be heard in every direction this week...There was dancing school at Turner Hall Saturday afternoon...Why don't the city authorities give those tramps that congregate around the water tank and sleep in the box cars a free pass out of town?

Eldridge, Ia., March 19- C.F. Clapp of Davenport, spent several days here last week...Billy Evans, of Long Grove, was here Sunday...Several tramps passed through here last week. They wouldn't work if they had a chance..."Eldridge is going to incorporate" is heard on every corner. Men who are in a position to know say it is to be a go this time...Sheridan township has voted for lightning rods and cyclone caves for all the school houses in the township. The next thing will be carriages and negro drivers to haul the kids to school...C.W. Baughman and Lillie Fessenden were married at the residence of the bride's parents last Wednesday. Their host of friends here wish them a long and happy life...John Farber of Davenport was here on business Saturday...Mrs. David Snyder was on the sick list last week...The D.R.I. & NW freight trains were run over the Milwaukee road to DeWitt Tuesday and Wednesday of last week...Wm. Smith is hauling several carloads of rock this spring: he will build a large and commodious residence this summer.

Eldridge, Ia. May 7- Mrs. Porter, of Topeka, Kan., is visiting relatives here at present...Mrs. George Ramsey is recovering from her recent
illness...Mrs. Mary McDowell is adversely ill at this writing...Lloyd Brown, of Argo, passed through here Thursday...Quite a number of our people attended the entertainment at Long Grove Friday evening. The proceeds were given to the Long Grove band...Mrs. Finley of Davenport visited relatives here last week...The dance at Turner Hall Saturday night was quite well attended...Hugh Bryson Jr. is behind the counter at Henry Woll's this week...Jonathan McDowell of Davenport was here wrapping up meat for McDowell Bros. last week...Chris Jessen has completed the job of papering and painting the Summit church...George Steffe started for Minnesota last Tuesday. He will spend several weeks in Minnesota and Marshall county, Ia...Vogt & Co shipped three cars of hogs and two of cattle to Chicago last week...Feeders are paying 40c per bushel for corn here. This is the highest price since 1894. Hurrah for McKinley...James Kuehl died at the residence of Mr. Johnson Thursday at noon. Mr. Kuehl has been in poor health, for some time, and together with the infirmities of old age, caused his death. He was born in 1825 in Germany, making him 75 years of age. He came to Scott county in 1847 and moved onto a farm near Eldridge in 1855, where he resided until a few years ago when he came to Eldridge to live. His wife died several years ago. Five sons are left to mourn his loss- Hugo, Carl, Rudolph and Adolph of Scott county and Theodore of Crawford county. He was buried Sunday 
morning in Pine Hill cemetery.

Thursday...Mrs. McDowell is quite ill at this writing..Bert Cool, of Summit, was here Friday...A large number of the farmers are returning the wireless ??eck rowers, they can't  make them work...Dan Stevens of the Wapsie was on our streets Friday...Mrs. Woods of Davenport and her daughter of Portland, Ore. spent several days here last week...Sam Evans and family of LeClaire, passed through here Friday...Chas. Key did some road work inside of the corporation Saturday...Miss Flora Ramsey was station agent at Toronto last week during the illness of the regular agent at that place...There will be a fishing party at Stevens bridge on the Wapsie Saturday, June 2. Everybody invited...Mr. and Mrs. Brown of Argo spent Sunday in this vicinity.

     Eldridge, Ia, June 12- The farmers of this locality would all welcome a shower of rain as the crops need rain soon, although nothing is suffering yet...We understand that there will be a picnic and grand celebration held at Long Grove on the 14th and are glad to hear it...Dr. C.T. Kemmerer went to Iowa City last week...Found- Two ladies spring jackets, one light gray and the other dark green. Owner can have same by calling at meat market and proving property...Several from here visited the ruins of the train wreck near Big Rock Saturday night...Two of the Richter's sewing machine men canvassed our town Monday...The German Vogel Scutzen at Boekens was largely
attended Sunday...George Clapp of Long Grove was on our streets Thursday...Miss Sadie Steffe of Davenport is visiting relatives here at
present...Miss Flora Ramsey was station agent at East Davenport last week...A large number of our people attended the ball game and dance at Boeckon's Sunday afternoon and evening...Charles Kemmerer of Iowa City is spending his vacation at home...Mr. Ramsey and wife started for Sanborn, Ia. Monday morning to spend a week with their son. Miss Flora Ramsey will have charge of the telegraph office here during Mr. Ramsey's absence...Claus Kuehl, well known here, died at the county poor farm Monday morning. Mr. Kuehl had been in poor health for several years. He leaves one daughter, Mrs. Wulf of Long Grove and one son of Durant, Ia. to mourn his loss. Interment took place at Mt. Joy Tuesday afternoon...Herman Boutonschoen and Emma Schwartz were united in marriage Monday, June 4 by J.S. Altman. The bride is a daughter of Peter Schwartz, the well-known retired farmer. The bridegroom has been a painter here for many years. The young couple will make their home in Eldridge.

Eldridge, July 2- Curtis Snyder of Davenport was here renewing old acquaintances Saturday and Sunday...Mrs. Emma Marti is lying at the point of death at this writing...George Ramsey started for McGregor Monday where he will spend the Fourth...A large number of our people attended the open air ??? meeting in Brownlee's Grove Sunday...Ligntning struck Finley Porter's barn several miles northeaset of here Friday. The building and contents were a total loss...August Lamp's team ran away last week while returning home from Eldridge...John Sievers, our lumber agent, has accepted a position at Avoca, Ia...The city council held a meeting at Turner hall Saturday night. If some good natured soul would donate Eldridge enough money to build a school house and support it, he would be held in grateful remembrance by
some of our people, who are losing lots of wind and sleep over this vexatious proposition, which is like Banco's ghost, it will not down.

    Eldridge, Ia.- July 9- Herman Smith of Long Grove, was here Sunday...The K. of P. dance Saturday night was quite well attended..Geo. Ramsey and wife celebrated the Fourth at McGregor, Ia...The majority of our people spent Independence day in Brownlie's Grove. Julius Lischer and Bruce Seaman were the orators of the day...Miss Sadie Steffe of Davenport spent the Fourth here...Hans Denker is moving his saloon across the road. He intends to erect a new saloon building where the old one stood...Mrs. Caster and her daughter, Ethel, of Pittsburg, are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Kemmerer this week...Major Sam Clapp of Toledo, Ia., was here Thursday to attend his
sister's funeral...The farmers are all busy cutting barley this week...A large number of our people attended the funeral of Mrs. Emma Marti, at the Long Grove Cemetery last Thursday. A large concourse of people followed the remains to the grave. Rev. Jones preached the funeral sermon from the text selected by Mrs. Marti before her death. The Long Grove church was entirely too small to hold the people that attended the funeral.

Eldridge, July 16- The farmers are all stacking barley this week...Our ball club played the McCausland team Sunday afternoon...M.H. Calderwood has announced himself as a candidate for supervisor on the Republican ticket. He will receive the vote of this township in the convention...Lingtning struck one of Bert Quinn's barley shocks last Friday morning and buried it up during a heavy rain...Hans Denker is laying the foundation for his new saloon...Thomas Bawden, of Davenport, was a visitor here Friday...Dan Stevens is going to run two threshing machines this fall...W.P. Neil, of Long Grove, was here Saturday evening...The people here were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Senator Gear. He was admired by members of both parties.

     Eldridge, Aug 13- Miss Sadie Steffe returned to Davenport last Tuesday...Cyclone company of Long Grove did a lot of work for Dr. Kemmerer last week...Mrs. Birdie Nichols of LaCrosse, Wis., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bell this week...Archie and Nellie Clapp, of Davenport were here Sunday...Miss Flora Ramsey is a telegraph agent at the water works in Davenport. She expects to remain four weeks...Gust Black returned from Carroll county last Saturday. He intends to move his family there next spring...The Miss Lookboro, Miss Haney and Miss Mud of Welton, Ia. spent Sunday here...The crowds at the gospel meetings in the tent are gradually increasing in size. The services Friday night were devoted exclusively to singing...The C.E. society of Long Grove will hold their meeting in Eldridge next Sunday evening...Dr. Kemmerer is fixing up the old butcher shop for a restaurant...The Democrats at their caucus last Thursday elected Herman
Oetzman as a delegate to their county convention. Mr. Oetzman is a dyed-in-the-wool Republican and is running for township clerk on the
Republican ticket. Mr. Oetzman regards their action as an insult and is very indignant about it. The Democrats of Sheridan township are very hard up when they have to elect a Republican to fill out their delegation

     Eldridge, Sept. 3-C.F. Clapp, of Davenport, was here last week...Fred Walker of Summit was renewing old acquaintances here Thursday...Quite a number of people from here attended the funeral of Mrs. Ruch at Summit cemetery last Thursday afternoon...Henry Frank and J.C. Ruch and Mrs. McKee, of Cass county, came back to attend their mother's funeral last week...Charles Kroeger has rented Dr. Kemmerer's place, north of town...Henry Hahn has purchased the new store building recently erected by Dr. Kemmerer and will conduct a saloon and cigar factory in it. This will make four saloons in our little town...Eldridge was well represented at Buffalo Bill's show Monday.

Quinn spent Sunday in LeClaire...Henry Hahn will move into his new building Oct. 1...George Steffe, of Summit, was here Friday...The McCausland Megaphone, a four page paper, made its appearance here last week...Some farmers have been offered as high as 54 cents per bushel for their barley.

Kemmerer have returned to Iowa City where they are attending the State university...Eldridge will send a large delegation to Davenport Oct. 5 to greet Roosevelt...Mr. Greeve of Donahue has purchased Turner hall. Consideration was $3,700...Henry Weise attended the Democrat county convention Saturday...James Killpatrick and Patrick Duffy of Summit were seen on our streets Saturday...

     Eldridge, Ia., Feb. 18- George Clapp of Long Grove, was in our town Saturday...McDowell Bros. put their ice up last week...Hans Denker got his ice from Davenport... The masquerade ball Saturday night was fairly well attended...Miss Minnie Steffey spent Friday in Davenport...Several from here attended the concert at Jacobsen's hall Friday evening...Some LeClaire people are going to give an entertainment at Turner hall the evening of Feb. 27...The smallpox patients west of town have about all recovered...A newspaper will be started here in the near future and will be called the Scott County News...James McDowell is in Davenport at present recovering from his recent illness...Mrs. W.I. Quinn was on the sick list last week...Miss Sadie Steffe has gone to Laurel, Ia., where she was called by the serious illness of her sister, Mrs. B.F. Quinn...Miss Florence Duncan, of California, is visiting in this vicinity at present...Peter Wiese, of Butler township, was here last week and purchased timber to build a new house early in the spring...Henry Bruhn was appointed justice of the peace to take the place of Peter Schwartz who resigned...John Kiolin of the Wapsie, was here last week and purchased lumber to build a new house early in the spring...Quite a number of farmers around here will move west the first of March...Some of our business men took a trip to the Wapsie Saturday...Gust Schultz will move onto the Brownlie farm next week...I.C. Yocum of Summit was here Friday...If you want to know anything about the weather ask our new weather prophet...Last Friday morning there were two chickens rode from Noels station to Eldridge on the brake beam of a freight car. We have heard of men beating their way on a freight train but that was the first time we ever heard of chickens dead-heading their way. But this can be verified by several of our prominent citizens.

     Miss Lillie and Master Ray McDowell left for their home at Hudson, Ia., on Tuesday after a two weeks' visit with relatives.
     Henry Swartz of Omaha, Neb., is here visiting with relatives.
     There will be an Easter dance held at Steffen hall this evening. Music by the Davenport Military band.
     Mrs. Henry Brondel of Davenport was here visiting with her sister, Mrs. Hammon, on Tuesday.

     ELDRIDGE, Ia., April 18- Mrs. Theo Kroeger was at Maysville visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Carl Marten several days of last week. Mrs. Emma Jacobs and children were Davenport visitors Friday.
     The Eldridge Social club will give a dance on Saturday, May 5. Music by the Davenport Military band.

     ELDRIDGE, Ia., April 24- Miss Minnie Elmgren of new Liberty was here visiting with relatives on Saturday,.
     Sunday afternoon Miss Alcinda B Wiese entertained a number of her friends at her home in honor of her 17th birthday anniversary. The afternoon was spent in music and playing games, the chief entertainment was an Easter egg hunt. Miss Hilda Wuestenberg received the first prize. Emma Ewoldt, second prize, while Miss Alma Zabel captured the booby prize, after which supper was served.

    David Snyder returned home Monday from a visit at Davenport.
     Mrs. J.P. McDowell left Tuesday morning for a visit at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Bonnel
     Misses Annie and Alice Fellner entertained some friends at their home in Mt. Joy.
     Mrs. Hy. Gertz and sons, Harvey and Darwin, returned home Sunday after a visit at Mt. Joy.
     Mr. and Mrs. Detlef Arp were at Davenport Tuesday visiting their son who is sick at Mercy hospital.
     Gray's one horse circus will be on exhibition in our town on Monday June 25. A grad street parade at 1 o'clock.
     M.H. Calderwood left Monday for a business trip at Davenport.

     Miss Nookie Murrison was a Davenport visitor on Friday.
     Hans Denker and daughter have returned home from a several months stay at South Dakota.
    Misses Laura and Emma Buergel of 1440 West Fourth street, spent several days this week at our town.
    H.W. Bruhn was a Clinton caller on Tuesday.
     Mrs. J.B. Crouch spent Friday at Davenport.
    The Misses Lulu Patton and Miss Bertha Clay of Hale, Ia., were visiting with friends on Friday and Saturday.
     Miss Edna and Master Harry Volstedt of Davenport spent several days at the home of their aunt, Mrs. H.W. Bruhn.
    Mr. and Mrs. Ed Birch and daughter spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bell.
    Mr. and Mrs. Hy Wiese and Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Thede of Davenport spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Kuhl.
     Mrs. August Koch is quite sick at the present.
    Miss Laura Buergel and Miss Alma Zabel spent Tuesday with Miss Leona Kuhlmann, west of town.
    Mr. and Mrs. Art Nicholson of Mendota, Ill. are visiting with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Bill.
     Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Denker spent Monday at Davenport.
    Mrs. Lena Boecken is at present visiting with her daughter.
    Mrs. Fred Kroeger was a Davenport caller Thursday.
    Walter Meier of Davenport spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Bruhn.
    Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Crouch entertained a number of guests on Sunday.
    Miss Mabel Schoor, of Davenport, is at present visiting with her cousin, Lyla Grillk.
    Mrs. Fuller of Rock Island is at present visiting with her mother, Mrs. Aug. Koch.
    Miss Pearl Strong with brothers Master Aaron and Frank are visiting with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Hahn.

    ELDRIDGE, Ia., Aug. 24- Misses Alice and Anna Fellner of Mt. Joy and Miss Emma Koch of Davenport were here visiting with their aunt, Mrs. Aug. Lemp on Tuesday.
     Miss Lila Munter left Friday morning for a month's visit with friends and relatives at Geneseo, Ill.
     Miss Hulda Wamser of Maysville was here visiting with her aunt, Mrs. Henry Grave.
     Dan Fedderson of Cleveland, O., was here visiting with relatives last week.
     Mrs. Henry Hahn was hostess to the Thursday Afternoon Cinch club this week at her home. Two tables were surrounded in the game and the gift for high score was presented to Mrs. J.B. Crouch, while Mrs. Henry Greve was awarded the booby favor. After the cards refreshments were served. The next meeting of the club will be with Mrs. B.A. Zabel.
     John Sievers of Everet, Wash., is here visiting with friends and relatives.

Donie, Tom and John De Cook, Elmer and Edward Noel, Herman Thomsen and William Kohl; second best group, Spanish Dancers-Misses Dale Keuhl, Lena Ewoldt, Loena Kock, Anna Ewoldt, Alcinda Wiese and Lou Wiese; third best group, Prize Fighters-Messrs. Ernest Wolf, Thomas Wolf, Whilo Carstens, Chris Madden, M.S. Radins and William Underholdt; best lady's mask, Spanish Lady-Alma Zabel; best gent's mask, Prince Carnival-Emil Voelkers; best lady's character mask, Fire Lady-Huldegarde Elmagreen; second best lady's character mask, Policeman- W. Guv; second best gent's character mask, Blacksmith-Peter Klindt; most comic mask, Hobo-Edward Elmagreen, Jr.; ugliest mask, Lady Coons- Messr. Otto and Albert Zabel; Julius Zabel of Davenport, veteran of Davenport Volunteer Fire company, received the $5 in gold given by the Eldridge Volunteer Fire company.

    ELDRIDGE, Ia., Feb. 11-Miss Milanda Stoltenberg of Mt. Joy is here visiting with her aunt, Mrs. Gus Lafrenz.
    Mr. and Mrs. John Lench were visiting with their son, Gus Lench, residing south of town, on Saturday.
    Mrs. Will Murrison is in Davenport visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Edward Balch.
    Miss Annie Arp of New Liberty was here visiting with relatives on Sunday.
    Mrs. Henry Goetsch entertained a number of her friends on Monday, the occasion being her birthday.
    Henry Lamp, student at the Brown's business college, Davenport, came home to spend Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Lamp. He went back to his studies Monday.
    A number of Eldridge people attended the masquerade at Donahue on Saturday.
