Death of Father McKeon.
The death of Rev. Thomas McKeon formerly assistant Pastor of
St. Anthony's church, was announced in the city yesterday morning. He expired at
Mercy Hospital late on Thursday night. His illness was cancer, which appeared on
his lower lip about a year ago, and finally affected his throat so that life
became a burden and death was longed for.
The deceased was 31 years of age. He was born in the county
of Longford, Ireland. He was a student of theology with Father Flavin, present
pastor of St. Anthony's and was ordained at Niagra Falls in 1871 for this
diocese, and came to Davenport immediately afterward. He was transferred to
Ringgold and adjoining counties for missionary service, about a year ago, but
his diocese compelled him to resign his pastorship and seek medical advice. He
went to Dubuque, where an operation was performed on his lip, but the cancer had
spread so that the operation was ineffectual. He then sought the best medical
advice in the West, but was told he must die - and ten months since came to
Mercy Hospital, perfectly resigned to his fate.
The funeral services will be conducted at St. Anthony's
church to-day. First mass at 7 o'clock, second at 8, and the office for the dead
at 9, to be followed by a solemn requiem mass, after which the remains will be
conveyed to St. Mary's Cemetery.

District Court
The court was engaged all day yesterday in a grave yard case
entitled Elizabeth McEnery vs. Morris Lawton. The trial had peculiar interest
for our Irish citizens, for more than a hundred of them were present during the
whole of it. The case originated in a dispute over a lot in St. Mary's cemetery.
Mr. McEnery attempted to build a fence around her lot and Lawton, believing she
had encroached on his premises, tore the fence down. This occurred in 1874. Mrs.
McEnery brought suit to recover $500 and to establish her right of possession,
and the matter has been in litigation ever since. It has been submitted to
arbitration two or three times but the results were not satisfactory, and so the
court had to settle the dispute. A number of witnesses were examined on both
sides. Martin & Lynch were for plaintiff, and Hubbell & Dittoe for
defendant.

Virginia Kessler.
Yesterday afternoon at a few minutes past 3 o'clock occurred
the death of Mrs. Virginia Kessler, wife of Chief of Police Kessler, after a
very painful illness of more than two weeks. She was first taken ill two weeks
ago last Thursday and from that day until the hour of her death she took no
nourishment except a little milk and stimulants. During the entire time she
suffered the most intense pain. For the past four or five days she was
unconscious and lay in a comatose state but still suffered greatly. She was
first taken with the grippe but other complications arose and the attending
physicians pronounced her case hopeless about a week ago, but her great vitality
kept her alive.
Mrs. Kessler's maiden name was Virginia Propst. She was born
in Franklin, Va., June 24, 1844. She came west with her parents and settled in
Davenport, where on April 24, 1865, she was united in marriage with Frank
Kessler. She was the mother of eight children, four only of whom are living. She
has one sister living in Rawlins, Wyoming; two in Plattsmouth, Neb.; one brother
in Grinnell, and one in Monmouth. The brother in Monmouth and one sister from
Plattsmouth, together with her husband and children were with her when she died.
The bereaved family will have the sincere sympathy of their hosts of friends in
this, their sad affliction. The loss of a mother is the most grevous loss that
can befall a child, while to a husband, the death of a kind and loving wife is a
terrible bereavement.
The funeral will take place Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock

cemetery.

THE LAST OF EARTH
The Funeral of Ebbie Davenport This Morning.
This morning at 9 o'clock occurred the funeral services
of the lamented Ebbie Davenport, the bright lad who met an unfortunate death
while at work the other morning. The services occurred at St. Mary's church and
a solemn requiem high Mass was celebrated with the following officials:
Celebrant, Rev. J.P. Ryan, pastor of St. Mary's; deacon, Rev. J.F. Kempker,
chaplain at Mercy hospital; subdeacon, Rev. James Davis, pastor of the Sacred
Heart cathedral; master of ceremonies, Rev. D.J. Flannery, pastor of St.
Anthony's.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.P. Ryan and was a
very eloquent and touching tribute to the memory of the deceased, who for years
had been one of the most faithful acolytes of the church. He portrayed the
excellent characteristics of the departed and his earnest, manly and true
qualities that had so endeared him to all, also touching upon those beautiful
thoughts from the scriptures, comforting to the relatives and dear friends in
the dark hour of their sorrow.
Instead of the usual shroud, Ebbie was dressed in his
acolyte's garb, a white cassock with purple collar and cuffs and lace surplice,
just as he had frequently been arrayed while officiating as master of ceremonies
in various functions of the church. At the grave Rev. D.J. Flannery officiated,
the interment being in St. Mary's cemetery. The church was crowded with friends
of the deceased, testifying to the esteem in which the lad had been held by all
who knew him. The dry goods house of King, Hasler & Schwentzer, where Ebbie
had been employed, was closed and all the proprietors, as well as employes,
attended the funeral in a body, requiring eleven carriages for their conveyance.
The employers tendered a beautiful floral cross about four feet in height and
the employes a floral piece the "Gates Ajar" with a white dove on top
as a token of their sympathy and as a tribute of regard in which Ebbie had been
held by them all. It was indeed a sad funeral, and sincere and heartfelt
sympathy is extended by all to the mother and relations and friends of the noble
boy in their deep distress.
